"Ya" is sometimes used simply as emphasis. It can also mean "already," as in "I'm already hungry."
Actually, I'd say that the "ya" has the connotation of "I've just eaten/I ate fifteen minutes ago and I'm already hungry". (At least in Spain it's like that)
But I guess it's better to ask the author :P

actually, "ya" in this case is just and emphasis, just before "muero de hambre", fortunately i'm not hugry anymore... at least for the next four to six hours =P
If you want emphasis, shouldn't you also use exclamation signs?
