Just making sure:

"What" isn't *quite* a question here. It's closer to "So, you think that...?"

(I know your English is very good, but this part is pretty colloquial and hard to explain, IMO)

Yea, it's often used in a reprimanding tone, like:

- What, you think you're too good to see your old friends now that you're famous?
- What, you're going to lecture me on something I already know?

I guess the closest meaning would be: "Are you seriously telling me that...?" with a frustrated tone.
