For the time being, your explanation is quite satisfactory and acceptable with me. I believe what you meant to say was that a cat cannot be referred to just like any other object which is just lying there in the kitchen. Or at least this is what our logic dictates. Did I get you right? :)

Yeah, "In der Küche gibt es eine Katze." sounds like the cat is always there... like it "exists" in the kitchen. One would use "es gibt" for location sentences for furniture, for instance: "In der Küche gibt es einen Toaster und einen Kühlschrank." ("ist/sind" is possible here too, though).
However, one can say "Da/Es ist eine Katze in der Küche.", which would sound a bit surprised.
