idiom ?

Можно и так сказать, я думаю. Любая идиома - это устойчивое выражение. :-)

Но не сленг точно. Или очень-очень древний :)

What is the literal meaning of the idiom (not the figurative one). I suspect we have the same idiom in Hebrew.

sharptoothed sharptoothed October 2, 2012 October 2, 2012 at 11:30:44 AM UTC link Permalink

The literal translation is something like "(So) Here's where the dog is buried."

Eldad Eldad October 2, 2012 October 2, 2012 at 11:33:44 AM UTC link Permalink

This is exactly what we say in Hebrew:
Here is where the dog is buried / Here lies the dog.
Meaning, this is the essence of the matter, this is where everything has originated.

In Russian this expression is usually said with a certain astonishment: "Так вот где собака зарыта!". I believe, Englishmen will say something like "So that’s what it’s all about!" in such case :-)

Aha! :) Thanks.
Well, we have the same here, but in this case we need to precede the expression with a small word, אז, "AZ", meaning "so" / "then".
